Methylene Blue

Methylene Blue also known as Methylthioninium Chloride is an organic chloride salt that appears as a greenish/brownish compound. German Chemist Heinrich Caro discovered Methylene Blue in 1876. It was originally synthesized as an aniline-based dye for the textile industry. Scientist Robert Koch and Paul Ehrlich realized Methylene Blue had potential for use in microscopy to identify bacteria, parasites, and yeasts. Paul Ehrlich coined the phrase “The Magic Bullet” in the 1890’s in reference to methylene blue.
